It is generally accepted that it takes between seven and twelve 'touches' to turn a prospect into a client. (A 'touch' is any type of contact, i.e. a phone call,
e-mail, direct mail, etc.)
A carefully selected and distributed promotional product can shorten that cycle and move prospects to clients faster.
What do I mean by 'carefully selected'? Your promotional item needs to be pertinent and
useful to you target audience. A screwdriver tool set would be useful to a construction client but maybe not so much to an attorney. Think about your target client - what would they value and
retain?
How are you going to distribute your promotional gift? A direct mailing with no follow up is a waste of your time and money. Always have a plan to follow up on your mailing.
Using the promotional item at a trade show? Don't give out your item to just anyone who stops by - make sure you get something out of the contact before you give them your item.
Notice the two words I emphasized, "useful" and "retained. If your promotional item is useful it will be retained. When it's retained it stays with your prospect and gives you a "touch" every time they use your product. Every use reinforces your name and message and makes them more likely to think positively about you and more likely to reach out to you when they need your product or service.
That's how a promotional product can get you from prospect to client faster.
